Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her (Gerben Mourik) (born 1981)
Most organists spend the month of November preparing for Advent and Christmas concerts and services, so we have chosen this melody for the occasion. Last year, we also used this melody, but in an arrangement by Pachelbel. At the time, we wrote:
As December approaches, this month we are pleased to present a choral arrangement with a melody by M. Luther. Luther called it “Ein Kinderlied auf die Weihnacht”.
This time, we have an arrangement by Gerben Mourik instead of Pachelbel. It features a very different sound idiom. Gerben is an organist at the Grote of St.Michaëls Church in Oudewater, not far from Polsbroek. He is known for his talent for improvisation, and we highly recommend a visit to his website.
His arrangement offers no less than six variations, with a wide range of timbres. The registration suggestions are provided as well. We hope that you enjoy studying this piece!
