Die Auferstehung Jesu

Justin Heinrich Knecht (1752-1817)

Knecht, together with his teacher Vogler, is considered one of the reformers of organ playing at the dawn of the Romantic era. In his numerous organ works, Knecht no longer used the organ merely as a vehicle for specific organ literature but as a perfect substitute for the symphony orchestra.

Vogler and Knecht were pioneers in using the organ for tone-painting improvisations. Naval battles with cannon fire, African funeral songs, and musical depictions of the siege of Jericho were part of their standard repertoire.

This sound depiction of the resurrection of our Savior includes the following elements:

  • the silence at the tomb

  • the breaking of the morning dawn

  • the trembling of the earth

  • the descent of an angel rolling away the stone

  • the resurrection of the Lord Jesus from the grave

  • the fleeing of the Roman soldiers

  • the angel’s triumphant song

Registration instructions are included with the various sections.

We wish you a blessed Easter.

Kind regards,

André van Vliet
