Trio in G - Gottfried August Homilius (1714-1785)

Playing trios is one of the most important parts of organ study. We’ve offered trios on quite a few occasions, with even an entire Trio Sonata spread across 2019 and 2020. This month, we’d like to present one by German composer Homilius.

Gottfried August was considered to be one of the great J.S.Bach’s most important students. He worked in Dresden for most of his life and was a prolific composer and a beloved tutor.

It’s evident from the Trio in G that composing was in Homilius’ blood. In this trio, he effortlessly visits keys related to G major and everything in a delightful, airy ‘Allegretto’ tempo.

As always, we register the various manuals at the same intensity. But you can do this using very different colors:

-2 x flute 8’ and 4’                          pedal board 16’, 8’.

               -8’, 4’ instead of 8’, 2’

               -8’, 3’ instead of 8’, 2’

               -8’, 4’ instead of a reed

               -8’, 4’, 2’ instead of 8’, 4’ sesquialtera      etc. etc.

The first one is actually the safest. But it’s also fun to do something different or take more risks sometimes.

Kind regards,

André
